FERNDALE – The home winning streak had to end at some point, and unfortunately for the Golden Eagle fans, it came on Friday night in the first round of the 3A state playoffs as Mount Tahoma defeated Ferndale 21-7 at Golden Eagle Stadium.
After a defensive first quarter, the Thunderbirds began to show their athleticism in the second quarter and scored a pair of touchdowns. One through the air, and one on the ground as Ferndale went into the locker room at halftime down 14-0.
A 61-yard pass play in the third quarter set up Mount Tahoma’s third touchdown of the contest.
The Thunderbird defense was able to stymie the usually powerful run game of the Golden Eagles. The longest run of the game for Ferndale came on a 12-yard scramble by senior quarter Bishop Ootsey.
Senior Conner Walcker was able to find the end zone in the third quarter to provide the only scoring for the Golden Eagles. He finished with team-highs in rushing yards (37) and receiving yards (49).
Junior linebacker Jacob Gandy led his team with nine tackles, while Walcker finished with seven and junior linebacker Talan Bungard had 6.5. Senior defensive end Kellan LaFave had 1.5 tackles for loss as well.
The Golden Eagles finished their season with an 8-3 record.
