FERNDALE – The strong improvement throughout this season of the Golden Eagles was evident on Friday night as the handedly defeated the Wildcats 48-22 at Ferndale High School.

It was the third game in a row that the Golden Eagles ran for over 300 yards, and had over 400 yards of total offense. More importantly, it was their third win in a row, after starting 0-2, and it was their third win against Wesco 3A North opponents.

Carlson

Sophomore fullback Ryan Pelton led the ground attack with a team-high 150 yards on just 13 carries, which included a 29-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that saw him break through four would-be tacklers. Senior Jacob Broselle continued his touchdown-making ways by scoring three touchdowns, giving him a team-high 10 on the season.

Freshman Isaiah Carlson was cleared to play this week, and his varsity debut was a memorable one. The 6-foot-1 190-pound running back’s first varsity carry went for 21 yards. His following carry went for 35 yards. And, on the next two plays that he touched the ball, he scored a touchdown. The first on a 5-yard power run up the middle, and the second on a 24-yard pass from quarterback Haiden Rasmussen that saw Carlson outjump his opponent at the goal line.

Guillory

Carlson finished with 123 yards rushing on 12 carries, and became just the fourth player in Whatcom County history to rush for 100 yards in a varsity game as a freshman. Sehome’s Titi Lamositele, Bellingham’s Tim Sellereit and Nooksack Valley’s Dave Longoria are the other ones. The only difference is that those three did it in the final game of their freshman season… Carlson did it in his first game.

Continuing the youth movement, Golden Eagle sophomore linebacker Jazen Guillory led the defense with 5.5 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback sack. Junior safety Andrew Monks also intercepted a pair of passes in the first half.

Senior fullback Mark Kolbert scored a touchdown in the third quarter, and Oak Harbor was able to put up three touchdowns in the final quarter and a half.

Ferndale (3-2) will battle Squalicum (3-2) in what looks to be like the Whatcom County game of the week at Civic Stadium on Saturday.
