FERNDALE – After giving up a touchdown on the opening drive to Sedro Woolley, the Golden Eagles cranked it up and walked away with a 40-21 win over the Cubs on Saturday afternoon.
After intercepting a pass on the first play from scrimmage, Sedro Woolley took 18 plays, and most of the first quarter, to go 65 yards on score the opening touchdown of the game. It was a good game-plan, trying to keep the Golden Eagles off the field, but Ferndale’s quick strike offense struck back immediately.
The Golden Eagles scored touchdowns on their following four possessions, and didn’t punt the entire game.
Sophomore running back Isaiah Carlson, who topped 100 yards rushing in every game this season, enjoyed the most productive game of his young career. He rushed for 196 yards on 16 carries, and five touchdowns. His final touchdown of the game was a dazzling 87-yarder that saw him run a counter, cut back, break three tackles and then outrun the rest of the Cub defenders.
Junior wing back Thomas Broselle also had a big game, rushing for 140 yards on just eight carries. He scored the other Golden Eagle touchdown as well.
Sedro Woolley’s methodical offense allowed it to run 34 more plays than Ferndale (73 to 39), which caused the Golden Eagle defense to make plays often.
Senior linebacker Kai Tipps led his team with 13 tackles, and he also had a pass knocked down. Senior safety Alvis Washington had 10 tackles, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery, and junior linebacker Jazen Guillory continued his stellar season with 10.5 tackles and a forced fumble.
The Golden Eagles end the season with a 5-1 record, and should be one of the top teams from Whatcom County for years to come.
