FEDERAL WAY – The roller coaster season that was Ferndale football came to an end on Saturday night as Federal Way defeated the Golden Eagles 38-10 in a winner-to-state/loser-out matchup at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

Gandy

Ferndale opened the scoring with a defensive play when senior linebacker Jacob Gandy tackled an Eagle running back in the end zone for a safety. It came one play after Gandy’s 47-yard punt pinned Federal Way deep in its own territory.

However, the turnover bug began to bite Ferndale in the second quarter, and Federal Way turned them into gigantic plays as the Eagles scored three touchdowns in the second quarter alone to take a 21-2 halftime lead.

Federal Way took advantage of more turnovers early in the third quarter, and scored three more times. Two touchdowns sandwiched a 30-yard field goal, and the Golden Eagles were down 38-2 going into the final quarter.

Bungard

Senior fullback Talan Bungard got a much deserved 1-yard touchdown run late in the game, and finished his stellar career with a 145-yard performance on 30 carries.

Gandy led the defense with 10 tackles, four tackles for a loss and a forced fumble, and senior safety Zach Nielsen added 5.5 tackles, a pass broken up, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Ferndale finished the season with a record of 5-5.
