MARYSVILLE – Ferndale won in four tightly contested sets over the previously unbeaten Arlington Eagles in the second round of the district tournament on Thursday night. The victory gave the Golden Eagles (13-3) an automatic trip to the state tournament, and a chance at the district championship which will be played Saturday afternoon against Snohomish (14-2) at 1 PM.
“So many of my players stepped up and showed heart in every game,” Ferndale coach Patti Hoelzle said in an email.
Senior Malia Honrud set her teammates up all match with 53 assists, which went along with her seven kills and three blocks. Fellow seniors Nicole Headrick and Bri Byrnes also had strong performances. Headrick had a team-high 18 kills, 20 digs and three blocks, and Byrnes also had 20 digs.
Sophomore Kaelee Bungard played awesome defense with 26 digs, to go along with her 10 kills, and junior Avery Schneider was strong at the net with seven kills and a team-high five blocks.
Ferndale has had recent success at the state tournament, with an 8th place finish in 2016, a 5th place finish in 2017 and a 4th place finish last season.
