SNOHOMISH – A win was much needed for Ferndale, and the Golden Eagles went traveled south to capture one against Snohomish 27-7 at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
The Panthers struck first one player after recovering a Ferndale fumble on a punt, with a 32-yard touchdown pass against a broken coverage in the Golden Eagle defense.
Many may have been sitting in the stands look at each other, and asking, “could this happen again?” Luckily, for the Ferndale fans, it was all blue and gold after that.
Senior fullback Talan Bungard scored the first of his two touchdowns on the following drive, which tied the game at 7-7.
Senior halfback Jacob Gandy scatted into the end zone from six yards out in the second quarter which gave the Golden Eagles a lead that would not be relinquished.
Snohomish was pass-heavy, but was intercepted three times. Twice by senior Israel Kennerley, and once by his twin brother Eli.
Eli Kennerley also caught his fifth touchdown pass of the year in the beginning of the fourth quarter to widen the Ferndale lead.
Bungard bulled his way for 146 yards on 27 carries, and closed the game out with a 5-yard touchdown run.
The Ferndale defense held strong for most of the game, and received seven tackles from Gandy, a tackle for loss from Bungard and senior linebacker Lincoln Thomas, as well as quarterback sacks from senior defensive tackle Wyatt Strait, freshman defensive end Chance Hatchett, and two sacks from sophomore outside linebacker Wyatt Broyles.
The Golden Eagles (3-3) will break away from their conference schedule on Friday when they travel to Lake Stevens (4-2) to take on the 4A Vikings at 7:00.
