MARYSVILLE – It was a good bet that Ferndale wouldn’t start 0-3. I mean, it hasn’t happened since 1993, which was the last season the Golden Eagle offense ran something different than the Wing-T.
Ferndale looked like its old self again on Friday night at Quil Ceda Stadium by defeating Marysville-Getchell 42-14.
Junior quarterback Nolan Boleak found sophomore wingback Elliott Lenssen for a 17-yard touchdown to open up the scoring in the first quarter, and that was followed by a 4-yard touchdown run by 225-pound senior fullback Talan Bungard in the second quarter.
A missed assignment in the secondary allowed a Charger receiver to get deep on his own, and the Marysville-Getchell signal caller found him for a 50-yard touchdown in the second quarter to bring the Chargers within a score, but that would be as close as they would get.
Boleak threw his second touchdown pass on the night later in the quarter when his perfect pass led senior Eli Kennerley past his defender, and to the end zone from 42 yards out. Ferndale led 21-7 at the half.
It was time time to led Bungard break loose in the second half, and he did exactly that.
He ripped off a pair of 35-yard runs, and also scored twice more. The first on a 6-yard carry where he was virtually untouched through the line, and the other on a beast-mode-like 60 yard run up the middle in which be broke multiple tackles in many fashions.
Bungard finished with a game-high 204 yards on the ground to go with his three touchdowns.
Senior halfback Zach Nielsen ran for 56 yards on 10 carries, including a third quarter touchdown from a yard out.
Although the Golden Eagle sideline erupted when Bungard rumbled 60 yards for a touchdown, it might have been more excited when 6-foot-3 370-pound senior Halston Hadrath booted the final extra point of the game.
Bungard not only starred on offense, was was able to contain the Charger option attack from his defensive end spot. He finished with five tackles, with four of them coming behind the line of scrimmage. Senior linebacker Jacob Gandy had a team-high eight stops, and senior defensive tackle Wyatt Strait had 4.5 tackles, and two tackles for loss.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) will travel to Mount Vernon (0-3) on Friday to take on the Bulldogs at 7:00.
