LAKE STEVENS – When you are a young team playing the first varsity game of the season on the road against one of the best overall teams in the state, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. Unfortunately, for Ferndale, it experienced many of those things while losing to the Vikings 55-0 on Friday night at Lake Stevens High School.
The Vikings scored touchdowns on every possession except the final one when the final horn sounded, and they moved the ball efficiently by mixing up the run and pass. They gained 241 yards on the ground and 288 yards through the air.
6-foot-5 junior quarterback Tanner Hellison threw for three touchdown passes, and senior running back Dallas Landeros ran for three scores.
The swarming defense of Lake Stevens was all over the field, and didn’t allow the Golden Eagles to get anything going offensively. Senior wingback Jacob Broselle led Ferndale with 20 yards on four carries, and sophomore tight end Jazen Guillory caught a 3-yard pass. Guillory was also involved in 11 tackles from his outside linebacker position.
Junior safety Andrew Monks and junior linebacker Kobe Sandstrom were also very active on defense for the Golden Eagles, each of them in on nine tackles.
Ferndale (0-1) will play host to Lynden (0-1) in one of the county’s biggest rivalry games this Friday.
