FERNDALE – The Golden Eagles were very machine-like against Arlington in a 48-28 victory on Friday night.

Ferndale marched right down the field on it’s first possession and junior quarterback Haiden Rasmussen scored from two yards out on what looked to be a broken play. The Eagles answered back with a long drive of their own, from there on out, it was a superbly strong output by the Golden Eagles.

The power running of sophomore Ryan Pelton and the slashing style of Jacob Broselle ate up a ton of clock, as Ferndale chipped away on the ground 66 times for 343 yards. Broselle took many carries from the halfback spot, which is new this season for him. He totaled 153 yards while Pelton pounded out 147 yards up the middle.

The play calling was masterful as the Golden Eagle offense was always a step ahead. A few passes sprinkled in and Rasmussen’s awesome accuracy (6-of-7) was on display for everyone to see.

Moments after junior Andrew Monks took a criss-cross double handoff for a 9-yard touchdown, it was Rasmussen finding Broselle down the middle for a 39-yard score. Arlington did score on a long touchdown pass before halftime, and the Eagles went into the break down only 21-14. However, it was the quick reactions of senior safety Michael Bernard that quickly put the momentum back in Ferndale’s favor.

Bernard’s play reminded me a lot of the play that Jack Squirek of the Raiders had against the Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII. To see that play, you can click HERE.

In the beginning of the third quarter, Arlington tried for a quick pass to the right side, but it was read perfectly by Bernard who swooped in front of the receiver and had himself a 10-yard touchdown return.

Broselle and Pelton each scored rushing touchdowns in the second half, and Rasmussen hit Bernard on a 12-yard touchdown pass near the end of the game that put a finish to another extremely long Golden Eagle drive.

Monks also intercepted a pass on defense, while freshman defensive tackle Landen Hatchett had a sack that forced a fumble, which was recovered by his big brother Geirean.

Ferndale (2-2) will host Oak Harbor (1-3) on Friday night.
