ARLINGTON – Ferndale entered the 3A district tournament as the fifth seed, and beat Edmonds-Woodway (the fourth seed) 3-1 in the first round at Arlington High School on Tuesday.
After dropping the first set 25-17, the Golden Eagles convincingly won three sets in a row, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-17.
Sophomore Alyvia Semu had a terrific overall performance with 12 kills and five blocks. Senior Nicole Headrick led Ferndale with 15 kills and senior Malia Honrud led with 42 assists.
The Golden Eagles struggled with their serving, but their defenders kept the ball alive for the hitters to finish plays with strategic, and strong, net play.
The win advances Ferndale (12-3) to the second round where it will face top-ranked Arlington (15-0) at Marysville-Pilchuck on Thursday at 7PM.
