YAKIMA – After suffering a loss to Peninsula in the state semifinals, Ferndale bounced back to sweep Auburn Riverside 25-19, 25-23 and 25-23 to finish in third place at the Yakima Sun Dome on Friday.
It’s the highest that the Golden Eagles have placed in 35 years, and in more recent history, Ferndale finished fifth in 2019 and fourth in 2018.
Kaelee Bungard added another double-double to her amazing career as she notched 12 kills, 11 digs and a pair of blocks in her final game, and fellow senior Alyvia Semu added 11 kills and two blocks of her own. Avery Schneider was strong in the middle with four blocks and six kills, and she also served up two aces, and Aysia Mitchell had 16 digs and four aces.
When I attended Ferndale’s practice before the season started, a lot of things stood out to me. The overall athleticism, the great communication, and the awesome leadership of the seniors. But, one thing that really stood out was the amazing setting ability of junior Brooklyn Cagle.
Cagle had 31 assists (and two blocks) in the contest, and finished the season with an amazing 947 assists!
The Golden Eagles finished their season with a tremendous 19-2 record.
