BELLINGHAM – When Squalicum pitcher Elijah Knowlton toed the rubber on Monday night it was just another conference matchup. The senior ace has been in this situation numerous times over the past few years as one of the most foremost hurlers in Whatcom County.
What unraveled was a brilliant showing in which Knowlton allowed just one hit and two walks as the Storm defeated Lakewood 2-0.
Knowlton also stuck out 16 batters, including the final two Cougar batters.
It was a scoreless tie after four innings, but Squalicum got something cooking in the bottom of the fifth when Brady Scammell led the inning off with a bunt single, and an error in the field allowed the fleet-footed centerfielder to reach second base on the same play. Scammell then took third base on a passed ball two batters later, and moments later scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
The Storm’s second run came an inning later when Chase Andersen singled into left field and scored Dylan Johnson.
Squalicum (4-2) will be at Oak Harbor (4-2) on Thursday at 4:00 to take on the Wildcats.
