YAKIMA – The physicality of Lynden Christian enabled it to pick up the 72-64 victory over Wapato, which enabled the Lyncs to secure third place in the 1A state tournament.
Both Ella Fritts and Estela Hernandez had to be removed from the game because of blood, but were both able to finish as they were aided by junior guard Grace Hintz who scored 29 points on 13-of-23 shooting.
The Wolves led 32-31 at the half, but an 11-1 run by the Lyncs to begin the second half gave Lynden Christian the momentum, and the cushion, that was used brilliantly the rest of the way.
Fritts’ relentlessness allowed her to gain multiple trips to the foul line, which she converted eight of her 12 attempts. She finished with 12 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Junior forward Allison Shumate scored 11 points and grabbed six boards while senior forward Tabby DeJong was 5-for-7 from the floor for 10 points and nine rebounds.
By winning the game, the Lyncs secured a Top-4 finish at state for the 20th season in a row.
