DEMING – The Lyncs scored 20 unanswered points in the final five minutes against Mount Baker and they defeated the Mountaineers 28-20 on Friday night at Bob Tisdale Field.

LC junior quarterback Trajan Schouten hit fellow junior Tanner Feenstra with a 1-yard touchdown pass, which put the Lyncs within five, 20-15, with 4:50 left in the game. On the Mounties’ next play from scrimmage senior linebacker Sam Faber forced a fumble, and junior linebacker Davis Gatterman pounced on it at the Baker 30-yard line.

Schouten

A few plays later on a fourth-and-seven, from the Mountaineer 27-yard line, Schouten found senior receiver Jalen Apol on a slant for 18 yards and a vital first down. Lynden Christian junior running back Levi Korthuis scored from a yard out two plays later. The Lyncs’ 2-point attempt failed, but they led 21-20 with 2:20 left.

On the next possession, Apol reached in a stripped the ball out on a third-and-five play by Mount Baker. Junior defensive back Jackson Corkill scooped it up and sprinted 47 yards for a touchdown.

Corkill also scored on Lynden Christian’s lone touchdown in the first half when he took a short bubble screen from Schouten and went 50 yards for the score.

The Mountaineers outgained the Lyncs by 140 yards, and they even intercepted a pair of passes, but late fumbles was the ultimate demise.

The Lyncs couldn’t get their running game going, only managing 36 yards on 24 carries. That forced Schouten to air it out, as he attempted 31 passes, completing 14 of them. Junior Jason Lee led the Mounties on the ground with 142 yards and a touchdown on 23 attempts.

LC was led defensively by junior defensive tackle Zach Sipma who had three sacks, one of which that resulted in a safety. Will Faber and Sam Faber each had sacks as well, and Gatterman had a pair of tackles for loss.

Defensive lineman Adam Harrington had a great game for Baker, hurrying the quarterback into throwing an interception, recovering a fumble and getting a sack.

The Lyncs (4-0) will host Nooksack Valley (3-1) on Friday night, and Mount Baker (2-2) will travel to Meridian (3-1) to take on the Trojans on Friday.
