LYNDEN – The Lions secured the 2A Northwest Conference Championship by defeating Archbishop Murphy 38-14 at Rollie DeKoster Field on Friday night.
Lynden got on the scoreboard before the Lion offense even took the field, when junior Collin Anker received a punt and raced 46 yards untouched for a touchdown.
The Lions scored on every possession during the first half, with junior quarterback Kaedan Hermanutz scoring a pair of touchdowns. He led Lynden in rushing with 41 yards on six carries, while also completing five passes for 88 yards.
Running backs Lane Heeringa and Luke Human also scored first half touchdowns, and Troy Petz nailed a 36-yard field goal, his fifth field goal of the season.
Lynden had short fields to work with the entire first half, thanks to an interception by junior Campbell Nolte, a long kickoff return by senior Kaleo Jandoc, and fumble recoveries in Wildcat territory by juniors Trey Smiley and Gabe Oudman.
With a 38-7 halftime lead, the Lions played the entire second half with backups in the game.
Senior outside linebacker Joel Bode led his team with 3.5 tackles, as 30 different Lions were able to get in on tackles.
Lynden (7-1) will travel to Sedro-Woolley (5-2) on Friday to take on the Cubs at 7:00.
