LYNDEN – Dawson Logan had the game of his life, and a night he’ll most likely never forget. He accounted for 377 yards of total offense, and had a hand in all five touchdowns as the Trojans knocked off the conference leading Lyncs 35-20 on Friday night.
The Meridian senior quarterback got things going early when he scrambled out of trouble from his own 14-yard line, and turned it into a spectacular 86-yard touchdown run down the right side line. The touchdown play was set up by a Dylan Hickok interception.
The Lyncs countered with a long drive that was punctuated by a 3-yard touchdown run by junior Levi Korthuis. Meridian would; however, not be outdone, and Logan found Hickok on a deep pass for 36 yards that Hickok made the catch on while diving through the air. Logan took the snap on the next play, evaded pressure up the middle by defensive tackle Zach Sipma, spun to his left and found junior tight end Cameron Webster all alone in the end zone from seven yards away.
LC had a huge play on the very next play from scrimmage when junior quarterback Bryce Bouwman found fellow-junior Tanner Feenstra on a 74-yard catch and run. He was tackled at the one-yard line by Hickok who had chased him down from behind. Korthuis scored on the next play, and all of this action came in the first quarter!
Logan scored on a three-yard plunge in the second quarter, and Meridian was up 21-14 going into the half.
A 29-yard punt return by senior Jalen Apol in the third quarter set the Lyncs up beautifully and Bouwman ran in a touchdown untouched from seven yards out on the next play. The extra point was missed, so Meridian still held a 21-20 lead.
Trojan senior running back Cole Roberts broke off a 58-yard run on the following possession, to get Meridian inside the LC 5-yard line. Logan would go on to score a one-yard touchdown, and by doing so, he became just the second player in Whatcom County history to score 10 career touchdowns rushing, 10 career touchdowns receiving and throw 10 career touchdowns. The first player to do so was former Meridian All-Stater, Eli Slesk.
Touchdowns had gone back and forth the entire game, until Logan scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 47-yard run. He finished with a career-high 234 yards rushing to go along with his 143 yards passing.
Bouwman did well in his first varsity start, connecting on 16-of-31 passes for 266 yards. Feenstra was the game’s leading receiver with 100 yards on four receptions.
Meridian senior defensive lineman Austin Anderson had a sack and a tackle for loss in the contest. The Lyncs were stopped late in the game when Roberts, Tanner Bouwman and Mason Knutson all sacked Bouwman on the final possession.
The Trojans (4-2) will host Nooksack Valley (3-3) this Friday night, and Lynden Christian (5-1) will play host to Mount Baker (4-2) on Friday night.
