BLAINE – Lynden Christian needed a victory to get into the state playoffs, and a convincing one is what it got as the Lyncs defeated King’s Way Christian 49-0 at Blaine High School on Saturday afternoon.

LC leaned on its run game early to set the tone, and it resulted in three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter.

The first one came on an option-keep by junior quarterback Eli Maberry who faked the handoff, kept the ball himself, and ran around the left end for a seven-yard score.

H. Owen

Senior running back Hollis Owen then followed the blocks of his two pulling offensive linemen, Nico Brommer and Kyler Sterk, and powered into the end zone from two yards out. Owen then scored again on a third-and-one drive play up the middle where he broke three tackles on his way to a 34-yard touchdown.

Maberry was on target all game, as he completed 16-of-19 passes for 270 yards. He also threw two touchdowns in the second quarter. His first was a 9-yard strike to senior tight end Trey Bosman, and the other one came on a wide receiver screen that junior Boyce Robertson caught behind the line of scrimmage, and the did the rest of the damage when he covered 34 yards before hitting the goal line.

The Lyncs led 35-0 at the half.

Johnson

Lynden Christian’s defense was outstanding the entire way through as junior nose tackle Treyson Johnson led the way with 5.5 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass batted down at the line of scrimmage. The Lyncs also shut down the Knight’s passing game, allowing just five completions, and intercepting three passes. Robertson picked off a pass on the LC sideline, and the Lyncs also received interceptions from junior defensive backs Jaxon Huleatt and Jacob Penner.

A pair of sophomores found their way into the end zone in the second half as running back Chris Kooiman plunged in from a yard out, and wide receiver Wyatt Kamphouse hauled in a 31-yard touchdown pass, his first reception of the season.

The contest came to a somber end when Penner was injured while making a tackle. The last report I received is that he is doing well.

The Lyncs (6-4) will host Cascade Christian (7-3) this weekend. The date, time and location are yet to be determined.
