LYNDEN – After trading touchdowns with the Cougars for three quarters, it was big offensive plays and huge defensive stops that keyed Lakewood’s 43-30 victory over Lynden Christian on Friday night.
The Cougars scored the final three touchdowns of the contest, including two runs of 85 and 63 yards. Lakewood finished with 345 yards rushing on the night. It was also the first time that a Dan Kaemingk-coached team allowed 40 or more points two games in a row. However, it might be beneficial for the 1A Lyncs, as they battled extremely hard against two top 2A teams. In other words, I would definitely not count LC out.
Senior quarterback Will Colwell threw for 258 yards and four touchdowns (to four different receivers), and he also led Lynden Christian on the ground with 70 yards on 16 carries. On the receiving end of Colwell’s touchdown passes were seniors Sam Penner, Jamison Hintz and Caleb Ryan, and junior Tyler Sipma. Penner also caught a pair of two-point conversions from Colwell.
LC took the lead from Lakewood just before halftime on Ryan’s touchdown reception. The lead changed hands three more times before the Cougars’ strong fourth quarter.
The entire game was a chess match, especially between the offensive mind of Lakewood coach Dan Teeter, and the defensive-minded Kaemingk. It was also a reunion of sorts, as Teeter was a senior on the football team during Coach Kaemingk’s first year as coach of the Lyncs during the fall of 1990. The Lyncs went on to win the Whatcom County League that season.
Defensively, it was senior linebacker Matthew Burrows and junior defensive end Kade Eldridge that led the way for Lynden Christian. Burrows finished with 11 tackles, including three for a loss, while Eldridge had nine tackles, including three for a loss, a quarterback sack and a blocked punt. Penner also registered a game-high 12.5 tackles from his safety position.
The Lyncs (0-2) will travel to Cedarcrest (0-2) this Friday night to take on the Red Wolves.
