NOOKSACK – With this season’s hopes as high as I imagine they are for the Lynden Christian football team, last week’s loss must have really gotten to Coach Dan Kaemingk and his team. Granted, it was against a great team in Mount Baker, but it sure was a wake up call. LC answered that call on Friday night when it soundly defeated Nooksack Valley 33-0 at Sid Lambert Field.

The Pioneers started strong, even getting inside the 5-yard line of the Lyncs, but were unable to come away with any points. And, after a scoreless first quarter, the second quarter couldn’t have gone any better for Lynden Christian.

Corkill

The Lyncs scored 30 of their 33 total points in the period, and it started with a 67-yard touchdown strike from Logan Dykstra to Jackson Corkill. A safety occurred when Nooksack was backed up against it’s own end zone and the ball was snapped over the punter’s head on fourth down. And, Lynden Christian also scored three times on short runs in their own three plays that they lined up in their goal line wishbone formation. In fact, each of the three backs (Levi Korthuis, Easton Stremler and Zach Sipma) in the formation scored touchdowns.

The LC defense played amazing all game, and ultimately held the Pioneers to just 99 yards of total offense. That says a lot, considering Nooskack Valley came into the game with the most potent run offense in Whatcom County, and they ran 59 plays to get their 99 yards.

Sipma

Sipma was the defensive stalwart with five solo tackles, two sacks, another tackle for loss, a forced fumble and an interception. Senior linebacker Davis Gatterman and junior defensive end Grant Vander Velden put tremendous pressure on quarterback Cole Eldridge.

Lync quarterback Trajan Schouten was his normal, efficient self again completing 16-of-23 passes for 175 yards. Stremler led the ground game with 72 yards on 14 carries and Corkill hauled in five passes for 86 yards.

Senior kicker Eli De Bleyker hit all four extra points, and also nailed a 29-yard field goal.

Lynden Christian (3-1) will be at Meridian (1-4) on Friday, and the Pioneers (2-3) will be at Mount Baker (5-0) on Friday.
