FERNDALE – After winning the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-18, it appeared that it could be another quick evening for the undefeated Lynden Christian squad on Monday night. However, the Golden Eagles rallied to win the next two sets, 25-21 and 28-26, but the Lyncs eventually ended it in the final set, 15-5, which kept their flawless record in tact.
The senior trio of Kenadi Fay, Liv King and Paige TeVelde led the way for Lynden Christian. Fay had 32 digs and 13 kills, while King totaled 21 kills and TeVelde had 30 assists and 19 digs.
It was the first time since the opening match of the season (against Burlington-Edison) that the Lyncs didn’t sweep their opponent, and that accomplishment alone went a long way for Ferndale coach Patti Hoelzle.
“I am so proud of this young team,” she said. “Showing up on Monday night with zero practices to prepare for LC (they had a game on Saturday as well), and battle the way they did. Some players on our varsity roster have never even competed in a deciding fifth set, so the pressure was high.”
Ferndale senior Libby Miller set the foundation for the Golden Eagles and had 57 digs on the night. Juniors Alyvia Semu (16 kills) and Avery Schneider (15 kills) had strong offensive games at the net.
“Now we have that under our belt,” Coach Hoelzle reiterated about playing that fifth set. “We can use that experience for future matches.”
Lynden Christian (8-0) will host Squalicum on Wednesday at 7:00, and Ferndale (6-3) will host Lynden (8-0) on Wednesday at 7:00.
