LYNDEN – Big, physical offensive and defensive lines. A stifling, ball-hawking defense. A power running game. Shutting out opponents. This is Dan Kaemingk football, and this is was Lync fans from the 1990’s and early 2000’s are used to. Lynden Christian used it’s size to bully Anacortes up front, and win 35-0 on Friday night.
LC got on the board early from 23 yards out when wide receiver Jackson Corkill took the hand off on an end around, sweeping to the right side of the field. The Seahawks had it closed off, and that was when Corkill put on the brakes, reversed his field and outran everyone to goal line. The Lyncs short field was set up by a Jude Veltkamp interception.
6-foot-4 215-pound senior defensive end Simon Anker was out in the flat on a pass play and intercepted a pass to give Lynden Christian another short field. Easton Stremler took the hand off, ran around left end and used a little extra effort to get into the end zone from 10 yards away.
With the rain continuing to pour down, the Lyncs were happy with keeping the ball on the ground. However, with halftime closing in, junior quarterback Trajan Schouten found fellow-junior Tanner Feenstra in the end zone on a 14-yard touchdown pass. Feenstra’s double move allowed him to get open, and when the safety came over to help it was too late as Feenstra leaped to grab the ball at its highest point and tip toe the left edge of the end zone.
Coach Kaemingk has always been known to create defenses to match certain offenses. This time, he had to create a defense to face the old-school single wing of Anacortes. Using a six-man front on the majority of the plays, it worked. LC stopped the Seahawks for a loss on 10 separate running plays.
Schouten found senior Sam Faber on a quick-out pattern for a three-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and junior running back Levi Korthuis capped his brilliant night on a 28-yard touchdown run that featured a few hop-steps, a quick juke, a broken tackle and him turning on the jets.
In researching, I believe that this is the first time that Lynden Christian has shut out its first two opponents in a season.
The Lyncs (2-0) will try to make it three in a row on Friday night when they travel to Blaine (2-0) to take on the Borderites in what used to an old WCL rival.
