LYNDEN – Maybe week one wasn’t much of a test. But, this week was going to be different with the traditionally powerful Archbishop Murphy football team coming to town.
The result was similar, with the Lyncs scoring two passing touchdowns, two special teams touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and one defensive touchdown as Lynden Christian toppled the Wildcats 42-0 at home on Friday night.
Senior Tyler Sipma opened up the scoring when he let a punt bounce, and then picking it up at his own 12-yard line. A quick sprint to his right, and he was able to get outside everyone and took off down the sideline for an 88-yard touchdown.
Archbishop Murphy was able to drive into the LC red zone, but an interception by senior safety Lane Dykstra turned the Wildcats away. The Lyncs then drive 95 yards over 12 plays, and scored on a 27-yard pitch and catch from Jeremiah Wright to Braden Kuik on 4th-and-13.
The special teams came alive once again two possessions later when Lynden Christian forced an ATM punt, which was blocked and scooped up by senior Kade Eldridge, who then rumbled into the end zone.
Eldridge scored from a yard out to begin the third quarter, and the USC-bound 240-pounder totaled 59 yards on the ground on 12 carries.
LC scored twice more in the final stanza, the first being a 60-yard touchdown pass from Wright to Sipma, and the second was a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior linebacker Brody Bouwman. It was the second consecutive week with Bouwman returning an interception for a score.
Wright had a great overall game, completing nine passes for 170 yards, leading the team in rushing with 101 yards on 10 carries, and he also led his team defensively with seven tackles, three quarterback sacks and another tackle for loss.
Bouwman, and fellow inside linebacker Kayden Stuit, each led the team with 9.5 tackles in the contest.
The Lyncs (2-0) will take on Bellevue Christian (2-0) on Saturday at 6:00 at Sammamish High School.
