SEDRO-WOOLLEY – In a defensive slugfest, the Lions capped their regular season with a win over Sedro-Woolley at Tom Mullen Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
After a stalemate first quarter, the Cubs got on the board first with a 13-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Lynden junior Collin Anker dove in to block the extra point, but Sedro held the early 6-0 lead.
The lead wouldn’t last long.
The Lions stole the momentum back in a blink when senior Kaleo Jandoc returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown. When Troy Petz’s extra point attempt sailed through the uprights, Lynden held its first lead of the game, and it wouldn’t be surrendered.
The Lions had trouble the entire first half moving the ball, but they put together their best drive of the game to begin the third quarter. The drive lasted more than half of the quarter, and consisted of strong running plays, as well as the only two completions of the game for Lynden. It was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by junior Lane Heeringa.
Heeringa finished with a team-high 117 yards on 20 carries.
Down by just eight points late in the game, the Cubs had one last chance after recovering a Lion fumble at the Lynden 28-yard line. Sedro-Woolley was able to pick up a first down, but ultimately came up short on a fourth-down play when senior outside linebacker Joel Bode sacked the quarterback.
Lynden also got quarterback sacks from senior defensive lineman Lucas Gunderson and junior safety Kobe Baar. Junior nose tackle Luke Winterberg had a team-high seven tackles.
The Lions (8-1) will have a bye week next week, and will then see where they are seeded for the 2A state tournament.
