BELLINGHAM – In what has been the best start in school history for the Lynden girls soccer program, the Lions defeated Meridian 2-0 on the road on Thursday.
The Trojans held back five to six defenders for the majority of the contest, and Lynden was on the attack. Junior forward Jenna Smith scored an unassisted goal, and freshman forward Asees Buttar also scored a goal that was assisted by junior midfielder Maddie Canales.
“Our focus this game was on our midfield play and they played well,” Lynden coach Carlos Melendez said in an email. “I thought we could have been a bit more creative finishing.”
Canales and freshman Adia Newcombe had solid games in the midfield area.
The Lions (9-0) will try to stay unbeaten when they host Nooksack Valley (1-8) on Monday. Meridian (2-6-1) will travel to Lynden Christian (4-3-1) and take on the Lyncs on Saturday.
