BELLINGHAM – Even though the Lions outgained the Mariners by just six yards, it was the little things that Lynden did to help them defeat Sehome 23-7 at Civic Stadium on Friday night.
The Lions narrowly converted a fake punt, while the Mariners were stopped short on a fake punt. Turnovers on downs gave Lynden short fields, while booming kickoffs through the end zone game Sehome long fields. And two long, time-sustaining Lynden drives resulted in touchdowns. Both of which featured a strong power-running game.
Junior running back Lane Heeringa led Lynden with 73 yards on 18 carries, including the two touchdowns that capped off the long drives. The return of junior running back Campbell Nolte was also a welcome sight to Lion fans, as he added 43 yards on the ground on nine carries.
Lynden senior linebacker Taivin VanDalen continued his great season by notching 10.5 tackles, including two tackles for a loss. Senior outside linebacker Joel Bode contributed with five tackles and a quarterback sack.
Lion junior quarterback Kaedan Hermanutz didn’t go to the air as much, but he did throw his Whatcom County-leading 14th touchdown pass of the season, a 19-yarder to fellow junior Isaiah Stanley. Stanley led his team in receiving with three receptions for 34 yards.
Sehome was led defensively by senior linebacker Hayden Huntley who had 8.5 tackles. Sophomore cornerback Alden Jacobs had seven tackles and three passes broken up, while senior defensive lineman Gavin Ortega also had seven tackles.
Lynden (6-1) will play host to Archbishop Murphy (3-3) on Friday at 4:30, and Sehome (1-5) will travel to Lakewood (2-4) to take on the Cougars on Friday at 7:00.
