LYNDEN – The Lions took care of business, and remained undefeated, by beating Lakewood 48-3 at Rollie DeKoster Field on Friday night.
It was workman-like, as usual, for Lynden as the strong running game racked up 285 yards, and scored six of the seven touchdowns. Both quarterbacks, Kaedan Hermanutz and Brant Heppner, each scored a rushing touchdown in the first quarter.
Senior running back Lane Heeringa, the team’s leading rusher, scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, and the Lions held a 28-0 advantage at halftime.
Lynden scored its only passing touchdown of the game in the third quarter, when a Heppner connected with wide receiver Troy Petz on a short hitch pattern. The speedy senior then made a few moves, and took off 43 yards for a touchdown. The efficient Petz has now caught 10 passes on the year, and has turned five of them into touchdowns.
Junior quarterback Charlie Ayres used his bruising running style in the third quarter to pick up a couple of touchdown runs, from 15 and 12 yards, respectively.
The Cougars got on the board late in the fourth quarter on a 30-yard field goal by junior kicker Dylan Kirkpatrick.
Hermanutz led all ground gainers with 83 yards on eight carries, just two yards shy of his career-high of 85 yards rushing, which he pulled off in last season’s quarterfinal matchup with Prosser.
The defense was led by senior lineman Jesus Ortiz who had two stops behind the line of scrimmage. Lynden also got an interception from senior defensive back Daniel Lopez.
The Lions (8-0) will travel to Anacortes (8-0) on Friday to take on the Seahawks at 7:00 for the Northwest Conference 2A Championship.
