BELLINGHAM – The Sehome offense had scored 21 points over the first two weeks of the season, and most people knew that it was going to explode at some point.

Friday night became “some point” as the Mariner offense accounted for 579 yards and six touchdowns on its way to a 48-7 win over Lakewood at Civic Stadium.

Wright

Sehome drove the length of the field on its first possession, but fumbled the ball away just one yard shy of the goal line. However, the Mariners picked up two points on the following play when the Cougar’s first snap of the game sailed over the quarterback’s head and through the back of the end zone for a safety.

Another Sehome fumble gave Lakewood its first true possession of the game, but that was quickly thwarted as junior safety Sawyer Woods intercepted an errant pass.

The Mariners took advantage in a big way by scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter. The first came on a 4th-and-goal from the 8-yard line when junior quarterback Nolan Wright rolled to his right and zipped a pass to senior tight end Cooper McAtee for the score.

Woods then scampered in from 19 yards on what would be his seventh, and final, carry of the game. The third touchdown of the quarter came when Wright called his own number, sprinted around right end and used a tremendous block thrown by senior wide receiver Grady Evans to go 71 yards for the score.

Evans closed out the second quarter scoring with a 37-yard field goal. By doing so, he tied a school record for field goals made in a career with eight. Andrew Andersen, who kicked for the Mariners from 1998-2000, also finished his career with eight field goals.

Evans

Evans then showed his receiving prowess in the third quarter by hauling in a 17-yard pass, and followed it up with a 5-yard touchdown reception.

Lakewood answered with its best possession of the game, which culminated in a 17-yard touchdown pass.

Wright threw two more touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. One to 6-foot-4 junior Theo Quiggle who used great body balance to stay in bounds from five yards out. The other one was a 15-yarder to senior Andre Watson who jumped over the defender, then snagged the ball out of the air as he basically took away what looked like could have been an interception.

Wright finished the game with 292 yards passing, 145 yards rushing and five total touchdowns, and Watson finished with eight receptions, which moved him up to 7th place in Whatcom County history in career receptions.

The Sehome defense was led by senior inside linebacker Fisher Hall who had 8.5 tackles, as well as senior cornerback Coleby Chambers who finished with 7.5 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. To go along with Woods’ early interception, Sehome also got picks from Watson and Evans.

The Mariners (2-1) will be at Burlington-Edison (1-2) this Friday at 7:00.
