TUMWATER – It was the third time in school history that Sehome made it to the state quarterfinals. Unfortunately for them, it was the third time that Sehome lost in the quarterfinals as Tumwater beat the Mariners 70-7 at Sid Otton Field on Saturday.
The Thunderbirds were forced to punt on their opening possession, but quickly scored on a pick-six. Three more touchdowns and a safety followed in the first quarter and Tumwater was quickly up 30-0.
Short fields allowed Tumwater to score three more times in the second quarter, and the score was 51-0 at the half.
Sehome scored it’s lone touchdown in the third quarter when junior quarterback Nolan Wright lofted a ball to the left side of the end zone, which was hauled in by senior wide receiver Andre Watson for a 10-yard score. Watson finished with 10 receptions for 92 yards. He also ended his final high school season with 100 receptions for 1607 yards and 24 touchdowns. All of which are Whatcom County records for a season.
Despite the running clock in the entire second half, the Thunderbirds were able to find the end zone three more times.
Watson led the defense with eight tackles, and senior linebacker Solomon McAlister finished with 6.5 stops.
The Mariners finished the season with an 8-4 record. It was the first time in 25 years that Sehome had at least eight victories in a season.
