EDMONDS – It took until week five for Sehome to play against a conference opponent, and the Mariners defense played a huge role in the 14-7 victory over Mountlake Terrace on Friday night at Edmonds Stadium.

Bair

The Sehome defense held the Hawks to under 100 yards of total offense, and the offense did just enough to get the win. Senior defensive lineman Rylie Bair led the attack on defense, with six solo tackles, five assisted tackles and the play that crushed Mountlake Terrace’s chances.

On 3rd-and-9 from the Sehome 47-yard line, the quarterback dropped back to pass, but he didn’t have any time whatsoever to make a play. Bair’s quickness allowed him to rip right between the left tackle and left guard, and as soon as he had his grasp on the quarterback, it was over. As he sacked him, the ball popped loose. It was the final offensive play for the Hawks on Friday night.

Sehome got on the board first with quarterback Jacob Kaepernick scoring on a 1-yard sneak in the first quarter. Mountlake Terrace tied the game at seven when it scored on a 6-yard running play in the second quarter.

The Mariner passing game had trouble getting into a rhythm the entire game, and had to resort to a lot of short passes. With the game tied in the third quarter, Sehome was faced with a 4th-and-6 from at the Hawk 46-yard line. Kaepernick threw a quick hitch pass to Ezekial Clark who made two players miss before diving ahead for a first down. It was a tremendous play that set up the eventual game-winning touchdown that also happened to be a record breaking play.

Nelson

Two plays later, Kaepernick found Melloy Nelson streaking down the middle of the field and they connected on a perfectly thrown 39-yard touchdown pass. It was Nelson’s 14th career touchdown reception, which is now the new the Sehome school record. Nelson also added the extra point, to make the score 14-7.

The closest Mountlake Terrace came to tying it up was in the fourth quarter. The Hawks had the ball at the Sehome 11-yard line on 4th-and-6, and they completed a pass, but sophomore outside linebacker Caleb Ryan made a huge play to stop them short and turnover the ball on downs.

The Mariners (3-2) will host Cedarcrest (4-1) this Friday at Civic Stadium for sole possession of first place in the Northwest Conference 2A Lake Division.
