EVERETT – The Trojans got on the board first, but it was hard to keep up with the Seagulls as Everett downed Meridian 34-22 at Everett Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
Freshman quarterback Jaeger Fyfe hit junior Hunter Jones on a 6-yard slant over the middle to give the Trojans the early 6-0 lead. The Seagulls came back with two scores of their own, but a short rushing touchdown by Jones, followed by a two-point conversion by Joshtyn Elmer gave Meridian a 14-13 lead in the second quarter.
Everett broke off two more touchdown runs in the second quarter, and went into halftime with a 27-14 lead.
Fyfe led his team down the field, using almost all of the third quarter clock, and connected with senior tight end Bryce Johnson for a 4-yard touchdown. Elmer’s second 2-point conversion of the night got the Trojans within five, but Meridian fumbled the ball three times in the fourth quarter, and couldn’t sustain another drive.
Playing in place of senior Tucker Harrison, who was out, Fyfe showed good accuracy and completed 14-of-19 passes for 102 yards.
Elmer led the Trojans on the ground with 61 yards on 15 carries, while also leading his team defensively with 10 tackles and two stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Senior wide receiver Daniel Short proved to be a favorite target for Fyfe, as he hauled in eight passes for 64 yards, while also totaling seven tackles on defense.
Jones had another well-rounded game with 30 yards receiving, 27 yards rushing, two touchdowns and an interception on defense.
Meridian (3-3) will return to conference play on Saturday by hosting Blaine (3-2) at 5:00.
