YAKIMA – Hustling defense turned into big runs for the Trojans, and they ended up running away with the 65-52 victory over Overlake in the 1A state tournament.

Meridian went on a 10-1 run in the first half, and opened the second half with a 19-6 run that ended with guard Jaeger Fyfe scoring seven straight points.

The senior sharpshooter finished with 25 points which led the Trojans.

Senior center James Hedahl also made his presence known early as he scored 13 of his 14 points in the first half. He shot 6-for-10 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds.

The overall tenacity of senior guard Canyon James played a major factor as his sticky defense and offensive rebounds stood out, as did the overall game of senior forward Talon Jenkins who finished with nine points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore guard Pierce Brzozowski led the Trojans with four steals.

Meridian (18-8) will now face top-ranked Annie Wright tomorrow in the quarterfinals at 5:30.
