BELLINGHAM – The Trojans played a masterful game, excelling in all phases, as they blanked the Wolverines 41-0 on Friday night.
Meridian was extremely run-heavy last week, but went with a more balanced attack against Friday Harbor, and it resulted in 253 yards rushing and 234 yards passing.
Sophomore quarterback Jaeger Fyfe was on target early and often, as he completed five of his first six pass attempts, one of them being a 15-yard touchdown pass to fellow sophomore Landen Downey. On the play, Fyfe was able to buy enough time for his receivers to get open by scrambling for 11.4 seconds.
Fyfe threw another touchdown pass in the first quarter, this time he hit senior wide receiver Hunter Jones on a 25-yard pass.
Junior running back Joshtyn Elmer continued his tremendous season by ripping off three touchdown runs, two of them going for 40+ yards. He finished with a team-high 124 yards rushing on just nine carries.
Fyfe and Jones hooked up again on a touchdown pass just before halftime.
Fyfe completed 17 of his 25 pass attempts, and Jones led the Trojans in receiving with five receptions for 88 yards.
Defensively, Meridian was led by sophomore inside linebacker Jaxson Hurlbut who had 12.5 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a pass defended. Downey racked up nine tackles while playing at a new outside linebacker spot, and Jones intercepted his fourth pass on the season. He now has an interception in each game this year, and he has nine in his career.
The Trojans (3-1) begin conference play on Friday when they travel to Nooksack Valley (4-0) to take on the Pioneers at 7:00.
