BELLINGHAM – If it could have gone wrong for the Mariners, it did on Friday night. Mountlake Terrace came away with a 19-16 victory over Sehome at Civic Stadium.
The Mariners outgained the Hawks 463 yards to 111 yards, but it was costly turnovers and special teams mistakes that would cause a notch in the Sehome loss column.
Mountlake Terrace started the game by returning the opening kickoff for an 83-yard touchdown. Sehome came back with a 21-yard strike from sophomore quarterback Jacob Kaepernick to senior wide receiver Austin Roberts.
The Hawks had scored two more touchdowns in a matter of minutes in the second quarter. A 39-yard pass for a touchdown put them in the lead, and when Sehome went 3-and-out, it was a mishandled snap by the punter that allowed a Mountlake Terrace defender to pounce on the ball, and score on an 8-yard run on the next play.
Kaepernick found Roberts again before half time, this time on a beautiful 59-yard pass. The county’s leading passer had another big day through the air with 278 yards passing. Roberts led Sehome with six grabs for 120 yards.
Dylan Roberts kept his great season going with 101 yards rushing on 18 carries.
Sehome made multiple trips into the red zone in the second half, but wasn’t able to come away with points.
The Mariners (2-3) will travel to Cedarcrest (3-2) to take on the Red Wolves on Friday night.
