BLAINE – Costly penalties and ill-timed turnovers were the demise for the Borderites as they were defeated by Burlington-Edison 28-18 on Friday night.
Senior running back Oscar Caridad had a career-night, rushing for 231 yards on 25 carries. His 2-yard touchdown run just before halftime put Blaine within two, 14-12. Hig big game also put him over 1000 yards rushing in his career.
The Borderites were victims of two long pass plays that went for touchdowns, but other than those plays, the Blaine defense played another great game. It was the usual suspects again in black and orange as linebacker Gavino Rodriguez and defensive lineman Wyatt Cole were in on a combined 20 tackles. Cole also registered his fourth quarterback sack of the season.
Blaine outgained the Tigers in yards from scrimmage, 377-309.
Junior quarterback Will McKinney connected on a 15-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Mason Vega in the second quarter, and he was in a good rhythm until he took a huge shot in the beginning of the fourth quarter and was forced to leave the game.
Sophomore Cole Thomas took McKinney’s spot and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Scott Baldwin late in the game on a 4th-down play. Vega and Baldwin each hauled in three passes for the Borderites.
Blaine (1-3) will travel to Archbishop Murphy (3-1) this Friday.
