TENINO – The Mountaineers racked up 461 yards of total offense while defeating Tenino 37-26 on the road Friday night on the black turf in the first round of the 1A State Tournament.
As one of the hottest teams entering the playoffs, Mount Baker did what its been doing this past month. Leaning on its powerful offensive line, not making mistakes and attacking on defense.
The offensive line pulled through, opening multiple holes for senior Marcques George. Already Whatcom County’s leading rusher, the 171-pounder ripped off 165 yards on the ground to go along with three touchdowns on 21 carries to lead his team.
However, it wasn’t just the run game that sparked the Mountaineer offense. Senior quarterback Landon Smith was on point early and often, and found junior Landen Hanstead on a 32-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
The two connected once again on the last play of the first half. With a few seconds remaining, Baker lined up to attempt a field goal, but the Beavers called time out. The Mountaineers came out of the time out with their offensive personnel, and Smith hit Hanstead on a perfect strike from 12 yards out to give Mount Baker a 19-6 lead at halftime.
Smith was 6-of-9 passing on the night for 160 yards.
The Mounties scored on their opening drive of the third quarter on George’s second touchdown of the evening, but Tenino quickly answered back to make the score 25-12.
Smith then put his legs to work later in the quarter, and was able to scramble 29 yards for a touchdown. George’s third touchdown of the game in the beginning of the fourth quarter gave Baker a 37-12 lead.
Tenino was able to get it’s powerful run game going late in the game, and scored two late touchdowns.
Defensively, Mount Baker was led by George who had 10.5 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss. Senior Wilhem Maloley also proved to be valuable with eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and an interception. His versatility allowed him to line up at defensive back, and on the defensive line at times.
Linebackers Brady West (nine tackles) and Dylan Moa (7.5 tackles) were also extremely active near the line of scrimmage.
The Mountaineers (6-4) will travel to Lakeside (10-0) to take on the only undefeated team left in the 1A bracket this Saturday at Union Stadium in Mead at 4:00..
