BLAINE – The Mountaineers showed their dominance early and often while defeating the Borderites 68-16 at Blaine High School on Friday night.
The Mount Baker offense rolled all evening, putting up over 500 yards, and was never forced to punt. 444 of those yards came on the ground.
Senior running back Marcques George had a huge game, rushing for 215 yards on just 13 carries, with four of them going for touchdowns. It was second career game that he surpassed 200 yards rushing in a game, with the other time being last season against the Borderites.
The Mountaineers also got first half touchdown runs from seniors Wilhem Maloley and Brady West and sophomore Dylan Moa. Maloley finished with seven carries for 62 yards.
Senior quarterback Landon Smith also connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass with junior wide receiver Hayden Rosse in the second quarter.
Blaine got on the board in the third quarter on a 37-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Colin Davis to junior wide receiver Hunter Vezzetti. The ensuing kickoff was returned 80 yards for a touchdown by Mountie sophomore Brady Bruland.
Davis and Vezzetti hooked up again on a long touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, this time from 54 yards out, and Mount Baker closed the scoring of the game on a 16-yard touchdown run by junior Bryson Moa who followed a key block by senior left tackle Joel Robles.
Davis did a good job at quarterback for Blaine in relief of Kael Evinger, completing 9-of-11 passes for 155 yards and the two touchdowns. Vezzetti had a game-high seven receptions for 136 yards.
The Mountaineers (3-2) will host La Center (4-1) on Saturday at 2:00, and the Borderites (0-5) will continue conference play at Meridian (3-2) this Friday at 7:00.
