DEMING – The Mount Baker wrestling team has had a long run as one of the top high school wrestling teams in the county, and the state for that matter. Being able to fill all 14 weight classes helped the cause as well, as the Mountaineers defeated both Meridian and Squalicum at Mount Baker High School on Wednesday night to remain undefeated in conference meets.
Squalicum got past Nooksack Valley 63-18, while the Pioneers narrowly defeated the Trojans 60-54.
“We have a few kids with some experience,” said Mountaineer coach Ron Lepper. “But we’re a really young team. We have a couple young kids getting beat up a little bit, maybe wrestling up a weight class, but at least we can fill all the weights.”
One of Baker’s experienced wrestlers is senior Skyler Isaacson, who is a three-time state participant, including finishing in 8th last year. Isaacson looked dominant with a pair of pins, each in under a minute.
Kilian Cronk, Josh Isaacson and Adam Harrington also had a pair of pins for Mount Baker.
“We’re trying to get a little tougher as a team.” Lepper said. “We have some kids wrestling this year that haven’t turned out in years past, and we’re trying to get back to what the expectations are of Mount Baker wrestling.”
Squalicum’s Jaiden Bundy and Nooksack Valley’s Cameron Bauman each also had two pins.
Meridian (0-5) will travel to the Everett Classic on Saturday. Nooksack Valley (1-4) will wrestle Ferndale (3-1) at Mount Baker on Wednesday. Mount Baker (7-0) will travel to the Warden Invitational on Saturday, and Squalicum (4-2) will wrestle Bellingham (4-1) and Sehome (2-3) at Sehome High School on Wednesday.
