DEMING – On senior night, it was a great group of Mount Baker seniors that played their hearts out in a convincing 56-35 win over King’s at Bob Tisdale Field on Tuesday night.
The Mounties couldn’t be stopped in the first half, as they totaled 291 yards (averaging over 10 yards a play) and held the Knights to just 71 yards on 30 players in the first two quarters. Mount Baker went into halftime with a 42-7 lead.
King’s came out firing in the second half, and played with a lot more inspiration than in the first half, but it wasn’t enough to upend the undefeated Mountaineers.
Mount Baker used a steady dose of Toby Jefferson early on, and the 214-pound senior fullback finished with 79 yards on 12 carries, and two touchdowns. Quarterback Mason Jacoby also showed great accuracy once again, as he completed 10-of-16 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns.
Ayden Rodriguez and Garrett Smith were often on the other end of Jacoby’s passes, and each senior receiver ended with four receptions. Rodriguez caught two touchdown passes and ended with 71 yards receiving, and Smith caught a touchdown in the second quarter and ended with a team-high 94 receiving yards. Rodriguez also scored a touchdown on the ground and finished with 43 yards rushing.
Senior kicker Christian Zavala also made all eight of his extra point attempts.
With all these seniors having great games, let’s not forget the junior running back Jesse Sande, who once again led the Mounties on the ground.
He scored a 54-yard touchdown on his first carry of the game, and finished with 125 yards on 16 carries.
The Baker defense had to defend the entire field for much of the night, as King’s spread it out and attempted 54 passes.
Junior linebacker Davin Beason did a little bit of everything while leading the defense. He had 11.5 tackles, two passes broken up, a sack, 0.5 tackles for loss and he returned a block punt 11 yards.
Also leading the defense were Sande at safety and junior cornerback Caleb Horsmon. They each had an interception and two passes broken up, while Sande had seven tackles and Horsmon totaled 6.5 tackles.
Senior defensive end Aidan Corning also swatted three passes at the line of scrimmage and walked away with a pair of quarterback sacks.
Mount Baker (5-0) will travel to Lynden Christian (4-0) on Saturday night to close out the season.

I grew up in Lynden, 62 grad.of L.C. since the B’ham stopped covering H.S. sports I’m glad you have filled the gap.
Thank you, sir. It’s not much, but I’m doing the best that I can. 🙂
