KIRKLAND – After giving up a 37-yard field goal on the opening drive, Mount Baker scored 49 straight points to force a mercy-rule running clock for the second time this week against a post-season opponent and the Mountaineers defeated Cedar Park Christian 49-10 at Juanita High School on Saturday afternoon.

The Mounties mixed it up on the ground, allowing all of their backs to get hand in the action. Senior wingback Kobee Malone only carried the ball twice, but made the most of the opportunities by scoring touchdowns of 14 yards and 29 yards.

Senior fullback Sam Barrett also had a huge 45-yard touchdown run on a perfectly executed draw play that caught the Eagles completely off guard. He finished the game with a team-high 83 yards on the ground on just six carries. Junior Jason Lee and sophomore Toby Jefferson also ran hard, picking up 57 yards and 32 yards, respectively. Lee is now over 1,000 yards rushing on the season. But, it was the consistency of the powerful offensive line that allowed the Mountaineers to rush for 238 yards, averaging 7.7 yards per rushing play.

Bass

Third-year starting quarterback Kaleb Bass was in complete control, completing 5-of-7 passes for 94 yards and three touchdowns. He hit junior tight end Waylon Kentner on a 24-yard touchdown on a play that Bass extended using his legs. Bass then found Waylon’s big brother, Michael, on a well timed out-and-up pattern for a 35-yard touchdown just before half time.

Bass hit Michael Kentner again in the third quarter on a tremendous twisting reception by the 6-foot-3 senior wide receiver for a seven yard touchdown. That was Bass’s 38th touchdown pass in his career, tying him with Jon Raney for the school record.

The defense for the red and black attack was fantastic, as it held the awesome Eagle rushing attack to just 152 yards, and it didn’t allow any pass completions on four attempts. Defensive end Michael Kentner had sack, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery that he took 13 yards for a touchdown. Much like last season’s state play-in game when Baker beat King’s 45-15, Kentner scored in the same fashion.

Allen

Senior linebacker Jay Allen also had a monster game, with four tackles for loss. The Mountaineers also got quarterback sacks from senior defensive tackle Braeden Shannon and outside linebacker Waylon Kentner.

The win advanced Mount Baker (7-4) into the state playoffs for the seventh season in a row. The Mountaineers will play Montesano (8-2) on the road in the first round of the Class 1A State playoffs. The date and time has not been announced yet.

The last time Baker beat Cedar Park Christian to get into the state playoffs was in 2014, and their first round opponent was? Yep, you guessed it. It was Montesano. The Mounties ended up winning that game 41-28.
