ANACORTES – It was a scoreless first quarter, and a 7-7 tie at halftime, but the Seahawks proved to be too much for Bellingham as Anacortes came away with a 33-7 victory at home on Saturday night.
First-year head coach Robb Myhre has already brought inspiration to the program, as evident by the new athletes playing football for the Red Raiders this year. Three new seniors, Trevor Johnson, Manny DePalma and Kyle McColl made their impact right away.
Johnson completed 14-of-23 passes for 109 yards, and also led his team in rushing with 23 yards.
DePalma scored the first touchdown of the game on a jet sweep from four yards away in the second quarter, and he and McColl each led Bellingham with four receptions a piece. One of McColl’s catches was a “play of the year” candidate on a 37-yard bomb from Johnson.
Sophomore safety Liam Poulton-Claypool was all over the field and led his team with 14.5 tackles, and DePalma chipped in with eight tackles of his own.
The Red Raiders (0-1) will host Lynden Christian (1-0) on Friday at 7:00.
