BLAINE – Senior pitcher Mikael Elliott, a transfer from R.A. Long, got the complete game win against Sehome on Monday, as the Borderites beat the Mariners 3-1.
“That’s what we need out of our ace,” First year Blaine coach Tanner Olson said. “He had a great game, and we finally got a complete game out of everyone.”
Elliott only allowed two hits, the first was by Sehome third baseman Shane Jamison with two outs in the sixth inning. Evan Kingma later knocked in Mel Ketteridge in the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late.
Senior first baseman Cruz Rodriguez led the Borderites with three hits, and he also had an RBI.
“Cruz is a grinder,” said Olson. “He’s the anchor of our team.”
The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the fifth inning. After Sehome freshman lefty Jacob Kaepernick got Ben Wallen to ground out to third, sophomore Griffin King reached on an error. That was followed up by four consecutive hits by Nick Gunderson, Kai Nagle, Chase Abshere and Rodriguez, scoring the three runs that were needed.
