LYNDEN – The Lions picked up right where they lest off last year (a year and a half ago, really) and defeated the Wildcats in three straight sets, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-18.

It was the senior trio of Anna VanderYacht, Faith Baar and Sierra McPhail that led the way for Lynden.

Baar

VanderYacht, an outside hitter who has committed to Western Washington University, hit .600 for the night and totaled nine kills, seven digs and two aces. Baar led all hitters with 11 kills, three aces and three blocks. The senior middle blocker has committed to Skagit Valley College. McPhail added five kills and a pair of aces.

Freshman setter Grace Rice made her varsity debut and ran a smooth offense by totaling 26 assists.

The Lions, just like every other team in the Northwest Conference, have had to wait a long time to play again. However, Coach Chris Elsner made the best of how her team waited.

“Waiting time is not wasted time when you wait well,” Coach Elsner said in an email Wednesday morning following the win. “There has been much growth in the wait, not only with skill, but in deepened relationships and culture. It was so fun to share that last night!”

Lynden (1-0) will host Squalicum (1-0) on Monday night at 7:00.
