RENTON – The Pioneers could do little wrong on Saturday night as it was big play after big play in their 49-12 victory over Renton.
Senior running back Colton Lentz scored the first two touchdowns of the game, and by doing so, he tied Ty Willemsen for the school record of 53 career touchdowns scored, a record that Willemsen held alone for over 20 years.
It was then time to go to the air, and junior quarterback Evan Brown did just that as he found senior wide receiver Evan Bravo on a pair of touchdown passes, one of 35 yards, and the other covered 25 yards.
A second quarter interception in the end zone by junior Jaxon Hester gave the Pioneers the ball at their 20-yard line. Brown promptly tossed a quick pass out to junior Cole Coppinger who did the rest by sprinting past the Red Hawk defense for an 80-yard touchdown.
Brown finished with 247 yards passing on 10 completions.
Senior linebacker Tristan Kamphouse closed out the first half scoring when he used all of his 6-foot-5 frame to intercept a pass, and he returned 58 yards for a touchdown. The Pioneers also had first half interceptions from senior safety Cory Olney, as well as Coppinger.
The Pioneers led 42-0 at the half, which activated the running clock for the second half.
Senior running back Colby Martin bulled his way for a team-high 75 yards on just eight carries, and his three-yard touchdown in the third quarter closed out the scoring for Nooksack Valley.
Renton scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter against the purple cladded backups.
Martin also led his team in tackles with eight, while Lentz racked up three stops for a loss, despite playing a quarter and a half.
The Pioneers (2-0) will host King’s (0-2) on Friday at 7:00.
