NOOKSACK – The Pioneers couldn’t be stopped as they jumped out to a 35-0 lead by halftime, and defeated the Grizzlies 49-14 at Sid Lambert Field on Friday night.
After a rough rushing performance last week, Nooksack Valley focused early on the run game, with senior Jordan Silva, and he didn’t disappoint. His strength, speed and balance saw him pick up multiple first downs, as he ran for 100 yards and four touchdowns.
The passing game was extremely efficient as well. Sophomore quarterback Joey Brown completed 6-of-7 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Seniors Caleb Kingma and Dawson Kimball were on the receiving ends of Brown’s touchdown passes.
The Pioneer defense had one of the best performances in team history, giving up just 87 total yards during the game, which included a 65-yard touchdown pass in the waning moments of the game.
Defensive linemen Gerrit Bruland and Dalton Hickey lived in the Hoquiam backfield, making play after play, as sophomore John Stremler had a team-high five tackles. Kingma had an interception and a fumble recovery, and Silva also intercepted a pass that was tipped by linebacker Daemion Perez.
Nooksack Valley freshman Evan Bravo showed incredible speed late in the game when he scored on a 40-yard touchdown run.
The Pioneers (2-0) will have their work cut out for them next week when they face Rainier Beach (1-1) on Saturday at the Memorial Classic in Seattle at 5:00.
