YAKIMA – The Lions won’t bring home a fourth state championship in a row as they dropped their quarterfinal game to the Mustangs 64-50.
Lynden started fast, and scored 20 points in the first quarter, but Prosser caught up quickly near the end of the quarter and finished with 18 points.

It was a lower scoring second, which began with the Mustangs going on a 9-2 run over the first 6:30 minutes of the quarter.
Sophomore guard Malachi Koenen ended the scoring drought by hitting a three-pointer, and that was followed up by sophomore guard Gordy Bedlington taking a charge. The momentum was beginning to sway towards Lynden at that point, and Bedlington’s following drive to the hoop drew a foul on a made basket which tied the game at 27-27.
His foul shot was off, but rebounded by senior forward Jack Stapleton who quickly got the ball to senior forward Brant Heppner who nailed a three-pointer, his fourth of the first half, which gave the Lions a 30-27 lead.
Lynden hung on and led 31-30 at the half, and Heppner had scored 22 of the Lions’ 31 points.
Prosser outscored Lynden 19-5 in the third quarter, and commanded the game at that point with a 49-36 lead.
The Mustangs maintained a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter, and eventually captured the victory.
Heppner finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lions (25-2) will play Columbia River tomorrow morning at 9:00.
