LAKEWOOD – The Mariners got off to a fast start and scored on their first two possessions on their way to defeating Lakewood 32-11 on Thursday night.
Following an interception by senior inside linebacker Malachi Swanson on the Cougars’ first play from scrimmage, Sehome running back Tommy Funk scored five plays later on a 13-yard touchdown run.
That was followed up by a deep pass from freshman quarterback Nolan Wright to sophomore wide receiver Andre Watson, and the two connected on a 31-yard touchdown pass.
Lakewood got rolling a little bit in the second quarter, and got on the board with a 24-yard field goal. An onside kick followed, and the Cougars quickly drove down and scored their first touchdown of the game to cut the Mariner lead to 14-9 before halftime.
The Mariners continued with the heavy run attack in the third quarter, with Wright and senior fullback Carson Neff each scoring on long touchdown runs. Watson caught his second touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter before Lakewood scored on a late safety.
Funk surpassed 1,000 yards rushing on the season (the first Sehome running back to do so since Dylan Roberts in 2018), and finished with a game-high 161 yards on 20 carries. Watson broke the Mariner record for receptions by a sophomore in a season, by catching six passes for 71 yards.
Senior outside linebacker Max Malo had another big game defensively, this time with 7.5 tackles, four tackles for loss, three passes broken up and interception. In addition to Swanson and Malo’s interceptions, Sehome also got takeaways from Watson and senior safety Jackson Dew.
The Mariners (6-3) will likely be playing next week, but the opponent, time and location has yet to be determined.
