BELLINGHAM – The Mariners were efficient in taking down the Seahawks on Saturday night in a 49-14 win at Civic Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Jacob Kaepernick threw just one incomplete pass and completed 12 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns. The first found a wide open Michael McLin down the left side line for a 17-yard touchdown pass. His second was a quick swing pass to his right that found senior running back Dylan Roberts, which Roberts then turned on the jets and burned 65 yards down the Anacortes sideline.
Roberts then scored on a 15-yard touchdown run that showed patience, power and acceleration. Senior H-back Christian Knudtson caught a short pass from Kaepernick in the second quarter, and broke numerous tackles and fought his way into scoring a 24-yard touchdown.
Kaepernick’s fourth touchdown pass of the game came on a 19-yard jump ball that senior Brett Meggyesy came down with in the end zone.
Austin Roberts also scored on a one-yard touchdown run when he took the direct snap, and sophomore Felipe Arreola returned an errant punt 27-yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Senior nose tackle Josh Dentel was virtually unblockable, making numerous stops behind the line of scrimmage and senior safety Jay Travier intercepted two more passes to go ahead of Lynden’s Kobe Elsner as the sole leader in Whatcom County with six interceptions.
Sehome (4-3) will face cross-town rival Bellingham (5-2) at Civic Stadium this Friday night.
