YAKIMA – The Sehome Mariners (13-9 in 2017) begun their baseball season with a double header on Saturday,
against some strong opponents. Their first was Selah, which had a 20-3 record last season, and is one of the top rated teams in the state this year.
The Mariners came up just short, losing 2-1. Junior righty James Meader was impressive and threw five scoreless innings. Junior second baseman Trevor Seaholm led the offense, picking up a pair of hits. Josh Manson, Makana Grondin and Mel Ketteridge also got into the hit column.
Sehome used a four-run seventh inning to rally and beat East Valley (16-6 last season) 7-6 in the night cap. Manson picked up the save in the bottom of the seventh. Grondin led the way with two
hits, and the Mariners also picked up hits from Seaholm, Manson, Ethen Brown, Tim Malo, Lane Middendorf and Patrick Miksovsky.
Sehome coach Monte Walton also had high praise for his defense. Malo had a great diving catch in center field, the infield turned four double plays and Graham Glendering did a great job catching all 13 innings.
The Mariners (1-1) will travel to Ferndale to take on the Golden Eagles on Tuesday at 4 PM.
