BELLINGHAM – Despite numerous trips into the red zone, the Mariners just couldn’t score the touchdowns that were needed as Anacortes came to town on Saturday afternoon and beat Sehome 35-9 at Civic Stadium.
The powerful Seahawk offense put up 473 yards of offense and score five touchdowns in the first three quarters, and they did it by playing almost completely error-free football. Only four incompletions, and just a few plays on the ground that went for no gain or a loss.
The Mariners, however, were able to move the ball throughout the contest, thanks to the scrambling ability of sophomore quarterback Nolan Wright and his dynamic playmakers on the outside, including Andre Watson who caught seven passes for 74 yards.
By doing so, the sure-handed junior became Sehome’s career leader in receptions with 97.
Senior tight end Braddock Duckworth also racked up the receiving yards, and he did most of it on a 71-yard catch, but an injury in the second quarter forced him to miss the rest of the game.
Junior running back Fisher Hall showed incredible toughness running between the tackles, and giving multiple efforts on his powerful runs. He finished with 74 yards on 15 carries, and he also scored Sehome’s lone touchdown of the game.
Junior inside linebacker Carl Bach (9.5 tackles) and sophomore strong safety Hudson Neff (8 tackles) led the Sehome defense, and Watson intercepted his second pass of the season.
The Mariners (3-3) will have a quick turnaround, but they will be back at home on Friday to take on Archbishop Murphy at 7:00.
