SEDRO-WOOLLEY – The Cubs got off to a strong start as they ultimately downed the Storm 50-7 at Tom Mullen Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.
Sedro-Woolley looked nearly unstoppable in the first half with inside handoffs, power sweeps and misdirection runs as the offensive line worked perfectly as a unit to help move the ball down the field.
Throw in an interception return for a touchdown for the Cubs, and it was a quick 35-0 lead in the second quarter.
Squalicum did get into the end zone in the second quarter when 6-foot-2 senior receiver Nick Laughlin caught a jump ball at the goal line with three defenders on him. The 30-yard pass came one play after the Storm had lost 14 yards on a double-pass attempt.
Junior quarterback Marcus Nixon’s touchdown pass, coupled with his dynamic running ability were some of the main highlights for Squalicum. Nixon finished with 85 yards rushing on 12 carries before being forced to leave the game with a leg injury early in the third quarter.
The Cubs scored twice more in the fourth after a scoreless third quarter.
Laughlin also led defensively with 8.5 tackles and one tackle for loss, and junior kickoff returner Joaquin Ortiz had multiple long returns, and he averaged almost 40 yards a return.
The Storm (3-6) will finish the season Thursday at Mount Baker (3-6) at 6:00.
